About Us

Debbie Matthews was born into a dog show family, that also ran a large boarding kennel in Mulgrave, New South Wales.  From an early age, she was involved with the care and welfare of dogs and cats  This included the daily cleaning chores through to grooming, breeding, showing and obedience.  However, her involvement was not limited to dogs and cats.  She has owned and exhibited over the years horses, goats, poultry, birds, guinea pigs and rabbits.

With her move to Dubbo, Debbie was still involved with dogs and cats, however at this time cats were her priority.  Breeding and showing Burmese and Abyssinian, under the Merooka prefix.  It was through the cats that Merooka Cattery and Kennel was established in the early 1980's.  Many purchasers of kittens were unable to find a suitable boarding establishment in the area, thus the boarding cattery commenced.  Then again due to client demand many cat owners also owned dogs and again were after a kennel where their pets needs were met.

Debbie's husband Darrell is also involved in the business.  He has years of experience, being involved with showing, breeding dogs and later grooming them.  He owned the "The Dazzling Dog" a very successful dog grooming business in Dubbo for many years.  With the demands of the boarding kennels ever increasing, it was decided to close "The Dazzling Dog" and incorporate the grooming side with Merooka Cattery and Kennel.

Over the years, Debbie and Darrell have exhibited and/or bred the following breeds:

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, English Setter, Irish Setter, Lagotto Romagnolo, Afghan Hound, Beagle, Dachshund Longhair,  Dachshund, Miniature Longhair, Saluki, Poodle Standard.  Currently, they still breed deerhound (since 1969)and Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, a breed which they have imported from the United Kingdom.  For more details regarding our dog breeding, please go to www.rickabykennel.com  Debbie has also been involved in competition, obedience and currently conducts puppy preschool classes.

Both Debbie and Darrell strive to provide the best possible care and facilities for their clients, with their involvement in the showring and their vast knowledge of breeds.  They are aware of the temperaments, care and needs of various breeds, with the kennels being situated in a rural setting of 40 hectares.  The kennel buildings and exercise areas have been spread over a larger area than normal.  This enables them to provide varying types of accommodation to suit the various breed needs. This inturn delivers a stress free environment.  The cattery is located well away from the dogs.  So again the cats can relax without being disturbed by the barking of dogs.
